The Press Enterprise – Editorial:
Ken Calvert is the best option in the 42nd District, which stretches from Eastvale to Murrieta. Calvert, first elected in 1992, brings a commendable grasp of federal policy and a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach to the job. He recognizes that any spending reductions will need to include defense spending, and proposes reforms to the way the Pentagon procures weapons and supplies. But he also knows that entitlement programs are the biggest driver of federal spending. He offers sensible options to trim costs, such as greater competition for Medicare programs and adjusting retirement ages and revising benefit increases for Social Security, among other ideas.
Calvert is also well-versed on local issues. His bipartisan work has included a plan to levy a fee on cargo to ease the burden of goods movement through the Inland region and legislation to bolster the area’s Forest Service aerial firefighting fleet. Such efforts show a cooperative attitude, along with a practical focus on his district’s needs.
